Freelance editing and proofreading
As an editor and proofreader for over fifteen years, I have had the opportunity to work with many types of documents. These items include business and sales, medical and technical, and creative writing.
Many editors choose a niche, such as working only with books or copy editing for businesses. Personally, I enjoy variety and can work on a science fiction manuscript and training manual concurrently.
What I do
Some of the items I work with are manuscripts for eBook and print, both fiction and nonfiction. In addition, website copy and blogs, manuals and magazines, reports, interviews, and email campaigns. Formats vary, but most common is Word and Adobe.
How I do it
First, I will take a look at the text to get a general idea of the project. I will ask you for any concerns or direction that you may have and other pertinent info. This includes the deadline, format preference, depth of editing, how often you would like updates, etc.
It is important to leave the authentic voice of the writer intact, so no worries about massive changes. I also ensure that the document reads smoothly with no stumbling points that may trip up the reader. I promise you that I am easy to work with, and will consider anything out of the norm if it is essential to your style.
Besides editing and proofreading, I am called on to do writing to improve the text when needed. I also have a certificate in medical transcription so I am familiar with medical terminology.
In addition to working, I am continually honing my skills. Studying is a constant, as there is no end to what you can learn in this ever-changing field. My goal is always to be a valuable and versatile asset to my clients as their “go-to” editor.
